THESIS WORK
The Resist technique or "Ink Wash" was introduced to me during my final year at OCAD. There are a few steps in accomplishing this effect. I first start by painting my piece in white gouache, laying it down everywhere except for areas that I want to leave inked. After the gouache dries I wash the piece with India ink, usually black, using a larger brush and wait for that to dry. After that is dried up, the next step is that wash the ink off. I take my piece under a tap and run warm water and wash the ink off with a brush. Wherever the white gouache was painted is where the ink washes off, because gouache provides the paper with a protective shield so the ink doesn't penetrate into the paper. What I like about this style is that it leaves behind a lot of unexpected marks and patches of ink. I like to look at as a very uncontrolled style of painting. I then bring it into Photoshop and add on colour using scanned watercolour washes, other textures and some rendering to complete the piece. This is the stage were I begin to grasp more control over the piece.
